Grape Growing
Addressing the Limiting Factors for Grape Production in Texas: Progress in the Past Decade & Plans for the Next - Review of the astounding progress that has been made in the management of Pierce's disease in the past ten years.  Site selection, cultural practices, promising bio-control agents and new varieties all have a place in successful PD management in varying areas of the state.  While there is still work that needs to be done to fine-tune our recommendations, plans are being made to address the second greatest disease threat facing Texas grape growers- Cotton Root Rot.  While decades of work have produced little appreciable assistance, new findings suggest that there may be promising lines of research that may finally provide some answers.

Speaker: Jim Kamas, Assistant Professor and Extension Horticulturist Fruits, Department of Horticultural Sciences, Texas Cooperative Extension.

Winemaking
Reducing Pyrazines in Texas Wines - A Discussion of Possible Industry Relevant Technologies - Most Texas grape growing regions were spared from late freeze injury and damaging hail events during the 2010 growing season. Such events can dramatically increase the level of pyrazines in the grape clusters. Session will address different sources of pyrazines and discuss techniques we have investigated in our laboratory to decrease not only olfactory perception but also actual concentrations of pyrazines, including fermentation and filtration approaches relevant to the wine industry.

Speaker: Susanne U. Talcott, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, Texas A&M Univ.
