Viticulture Practices Series – Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Gulf Coast, is proud to announce an a la carte series of Vineyard Practices workshops for the 2018 growing season.

These workshops will provide hands-on opportunities for learning the essential viticulture management techniques in the areas of viticulture from site selection to testing berry ripeness. Learn to use the tools necessary for managing your vineyard. Each class is a la cart, with a limited class size. Date, time and location have been set for following three workshops. Scheduled Workshops:

Site Evaluation – Evaluate a site’s suitability to growing grapes successfully, determine best layout, trellis, variety and rootstock. Bring your laptop and geographic location for your site, and any soil and water test results you have. $40 (Dr. Justin Scheiner, Fran Pontasch) Date: Dec. 1 – Friday, 12 – 4pm Location: Texas A&M Horticulture Teaching, Research, & Education Center 9690 FM 50, Somerville, TX (behind the FedEx Freight Distribution Center).

Propagating & Grafting Grapevines – Learn hands-on to propagate vines from cuttings and to graft successfully. $40 (Dr. Andrew King, Dr. Justin Scheiner, Fran Pontasch) Date: Thurs, Dec. 7, 12 – 4pm Location: Texas A&M Horticulture Teaching, Research, & Education Center 9690 FM 50, Somerville, TX (behind the FedEx Freight Distribution Center)

Disease and Pest Management – Go through a season’s diseases and pests and design the best disease and pest management Step by Step. Includes the latest Texas Disease & Pest Management Spray Guide. $45 (Dr. Justin Scheiner, Fran Pontasch) Date: March 2, 2018, Fri, 1 – 5pm Location: Texas A&M Horticulture Teaching, Research, &Education Center 9690 FM 50, Somerville, TX (behind the FedEx Freight Distribution Center)

 

Workshops not yet scheduled:
• Young Vine Training, Planting, Pruning – Plant new vines, and prune and train a 1 year old Blanc Du Bois vineyard to the Watson Trellis System. • Vine Balance – Analyze the canopy and irrigation of a vineyard, collect petioles, and determine fertilizer needs based on a nutritional analysis. Vines in balance tend to produce high quality grapes on healthy vines. • Preparing for Harvest – Estimate and evaluate a crop for harvest, collect and learn to correctly test samples for ripeness.
