Bell Mountain Vineyard Ceremonial Restoration/Replanting — Volunteers Needed

Posted on: 05/14/2018, in: | Charles "CC" and Marguerite Haley | 210-573-0000

Charles “CC” his wife,  Marguerite Haley,  purchased the historic Bell Mountain Vineyards in Fall 2017 .  They are having a ceremonial restoration/ replanting of Bell Mountain at 10:00am on May 19th, 2018.  Click here for more information.

Evelyn Oberhelman (the co-founder) will symbolically plant the first of 9,000 vines we’ll begin installing starting that morning!

Bell Mountain Vineyards was established in 1976 and was the first vineyard & winery in Fredericksburg.  Bob Oberhelman searched years for the perfect site for his dream and his struggles to build a successful wine operation in the area led many others to follow in his footsteps.  This, of course, greatly contributed to the growing Hill Country Wine industry.

The ceremony at 10:00am on the 19th will include: a welcome the guests; local officials will have an opportunity to speak; the Father from Evelyn’s church, St. Mary’s, will bless the vineyard; and, we’ll then have Evelyn plant the first vine.  The other guests will be welcome to plant one, too!

FAQ’s:

  • Can I bring my children and dog(s) or other pets?  Since there will be a lot going on we ask only 16 years and up join us for this event.  Pets should be left at home as the property is 75 acres and they could easily wander off!
  • What should I bring?  Sunscreen, a hat, closed toe shoes you don’t mind getting dirty and gardening gloves (if you have them, but there will be extra on site.)  Knee pads might be helpful.  Food and beverages will be provided.
  • Where can I park?  There will be a parking lot available right before the entrance to the vineyard, but space is limited so please car pool if you can.
  • What if I can’t be there the whole time?  Come when you can and leave when you have to… we’ll appreciate any time you can volunteer!
  • Can I just attend the Planting Ceremony and Blessing of the Vineyards?  Of course… we’d love to have you!
  • What if I’ve never planted a grapevine before?  It’s incredibly simple and we’ll teach you everything you need to know in just a few minutes.
  • What are the vines we’ll be planting?  Alvarinho, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malvasia Bianca, Mourvedre, Sagrantino and Sangiovese.  We’ll also plant a demonstration block with 20+ varietals.
  • How many vines will we be planting?  3,700 on May 19th and 20th; and, 5,250 on June 2nd and 3rd.
  • What are the vines like before we plant them?  Some will be bare-rooted (called dormant) and will have no leaves.  Others will have their roots in a small soil container and will have leaves already sprouted.
  • Will there be a lot of digging?  No, the holes are all pre-drilled and the soil is very sandy.  You’ll just take a vine from a bucket; lower it into the hole; and, cover the roots.
